I'm Denis. This is my patch of river.

I grew up near this stretch of the Blackwater, and I've never really left it. Thirty-five years ago I started taking friends and their kids out on the water in an old canoe, mostly because I couldn't imagine keeping a river this good to myself. It turned into a business almost by accident.

Blackwater Boating runs from my own launch on my own land, between Lismore and Cappoquin. That matters more than it sounds — it means no ticket queues, no shared car park, no rushing. You arrive, we get you kitted out, and we're on the water in a few minutes.

"You don't need experience. You just need to be willing to get in the boat — the river does the rest."

This part of the Blackwater is wide, deep and slow-moving, which is exactly why it suits complete beginners so well. There's no white water, no technical reading of the current — just a gentle drift past reed beds, grazing fields, and the walls of Lismore Castle rising out of the trees. I've guided nervous first-timers, boisterous school groups, Spanish students on their first trip outside a classroom, and American visitors who came for the castle and stayed for the river. Nearly everyone says the same thing afterwards: they didn't expect it to be this easy, or this beautiful.

These days, growing the number of Irish families who come and try it is what I'm most keen on. It's a proper day out — cousins, grandparents, and toddlers in the middle of the canoe, all on the water together. If you're local and have never done it, you're exactly who this was built for.
